You can also visit the island by helicopter charter from Antigua. This is also one of the best ways to do a flyover from Antigua to see the island and the awesome Soufriere Hills Volcano. The helicopter charter service, operated by Island Aviation Ltd. also operates out of St. Kitts direct to Montserrat. Travel out of Antigua to Montserrat and vice versa is possible either via helicopter or via ferry services which operate daily to and from the island. A fast, comfortable ride of just under an hour by ferry and twenty minutes by helicopter. At least two, and sometimes three, helicopters depart every day except Wednesday and Saturday from Antigua's Byrd airport to Montserrat's newly expanded airport in Gerald's, a hamlet on the still-intact north side of the island. With room for about 8 passengers, each helicopter charges EC$300 (US$111) round-trip for a ride that takes about 20 minutes each way. |
